Ghoulishly Girly

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. As a child, I couldn't wait to get my costume on and out that door to start canvassing the neigborhood in search of tootsie rolls, m&m's and bubble gum. As a child growing up on Long Island my most vivid memory of Halloween was trick or treating with my cousins, we would make sure to have not just one costume but two because you just never knew what goblin, witch or Luke Skywalker was going to spray you with shaving cream. Oh what wonderful memories!

Now at the ripe old age of...let's just say 30 something, I still love it. Instead of looking forward to the tricks and treats I look forward to planning and decorating Halloween parties for my clients. I'm always looking for unique and interesting decor ideas and
The Hostess with the Mostess has my vote this year for the best themed halloween party idea, A Ghoul's Night Halloween Party. A wonderfully ghoulishly girly themed party, filled with glittered pumkims, pink skulls adorned with fake lashes and rhinestones.

Grab your best BFF's, your best halloween costume and try some of the
HWTM decor ideas to create memories you won't soon forget.

Filene's Basement - “Running of the Brides®.”

Filene’s Basement is known for its bargains on everything from fashions to luggage, but perhaps the store is most famous for its annual Bridal Gown Events when brides-to-be can save hundreds, even thousands of dollars on designer wedding gowns. The sale is held in selected Filene’s Basement stores once a year (twice a year in Boston). News reports so often compare it to the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain that the event is now officially called the “Running of the Brides®.”

The day of the sale, brides-to-be and their helpers line up early. When the doors open, they run full speed towards the racks. In less than 60 seconds, the racks are stripped bare (store employees have to hold on to the fixtures so they don’t topple). The women grab whatever gowns they can, haul them off to a corner, strip down to their underwear and start trying on dresses. Minutes later the trading begins. Every dress, no matter what size, style or color, gets bartered for another, as each bride tries to find the gown of her dreams at a cut-rate price.

The next Running with the Brides event is scheduled for August 14th in Manhasset, NY. I suggest all you brides looking for a major deal, catch a plane, train or automobile. Get there!

A 40th Birthday Bash in Aptos

We met our client in March and began planning a fabulous 40th celebration for him. He really wanted a relaxed setting where he was able to enjoy his special day with his family & friends so we put together a wonderful beach event. On the menu; lobster, baked clams, a variety of salads, veggies, after dinner smores and a beatutiful sunset (we can't take credit for that ;)

The tone was set by an ocean inspired custom designed invitation by Feterie which included matching postage stamps.

Here's a peek into that special day.

Design Divine - Feterie

We're happy to introduce a new Details of Merriment blog segment, Partner Profiles. Once a month we'll introduce you to amazing Details of Merriment partners, who have worked with us and exhibited a defined style and vision that matches ours.

Over the years we've worked with a number of amazing vendors and over the course of working together these relationshsips have blossomed into lasting friendships. One of these vendors we've known for a little over 7 years now, Cathe Huyhn-Sison of Feterie. She's an amazing graphic designer, a true artist.

Tell us about Feterie?
Feterie is a company specializing in the design of stationery and paper goods. Our clients and customers are design-lovers and paper aficionados with discerning tastes who are looking for an alternative to the standard stationery or paper goods. We also offer custom design for couture correspondences, such as wedding invitations, as well as a tailored collection of event stationery (which we are refreshing right now with new and updated design!).

How many year’s in business?
We have been in business since 2003, but recently went through a name change to reflect a renewed vision and design philosophy for the company.

What made you start a stationery business?
As a designer, I have often designed countless stationery and invitations for myself, friends and family. It wasn’t until I myself became engaged and was searching for the right stationery for my own wedding did I decide that I should launch a collection of event stationery for consumers like myself — design-lovers who have discerning tastes and looking for an alternative to the standard traditional options that was available at the time.

What kind of education did you need to acquire?
As a classically-trained graphic designer, I have to stress the importance of knowing the basics of design theory. However, I have met many wonderful and talented designers who were never in official design school. They produce amazing work! I think what is really needed is a good eye for design, a willingness to learn and take criticism well. Of course, some courses in color theory or design basics would help, too.

What’s the one piece of business advice you’d give someone?
Be willing to learn from others, take criticism well and offer advice to others. Join a community of like-minded peers and connect with them.

What excites you?
When I have a new idea for a design, work on a new pattern or a new product idea, I become completely giddy. I also love discovering new ways to pair colors in unexpected colorways.

What/who inspires you?
I’m inspired from many things — mundane things like the shadows of a window blind or cobblestone streets to a Sunday visit to the art museum.

I’m listening to...
Sympathique right now, it’s a cute French song by a US-group called Pink Martini that sings in French, among other languages. Taking a break from my usual NPR haunts.

I’m watching...Lost, but I’d rather be watching Project Runway.

I’m reading
…my last issue as a subscriber to Domino Magazine!

I just bought…some yummy treats from Kara’s Cupcakes!

Favorite City... Paris, of course. It’s got my heart at “Bonjour!” I miss walking the streets and finding cute little shops in forgotten passageways.

Martha or Rachel Ray?
That’s really hard! Can it be both? I love Martha for her incredible ability to stylized mundane things into works of art, but I also love Rachel for her wonderful down-to-Earth appeal!
